An attempt at a translation of my motto, which was written about ten centuries ago.
为天地立心,
张载(1020 – 1077)
为生民立命,
为往圣继绝学,
为万世开太平。
This motto has been used in diplomatic situations for several times in history, and translations, some with explanations, are readily available. Still, I will try to give it my own translation below.
To decree the principles of nature;
To secure the livelihoods of people.
To impart the wisdom of sages past;
To establish peace for generations to come.
— Zhang Zai (1020 CE – 1077 CE)
