[Lux] Our Upcoming Presence at A.U. Photography Society (PhotoSoc)’s Travel Exhibition

I also did the graphics for the marketing material last week.

FW’s Upcoming Entries

Below you can browse the photos from me that may be on display. Each has a brief tag about their context and equipment.

Resolution notes: these photos are significantly downsized and provided here at web-friendly resolutions. You will have an opportunity to browse and purchase higher resolution copies closer to the event.

Land Bird on a Distant Island (2018)

A bird that just hopped out of the forest on N. Changshan Island, Shandong Province, China.

Equipment: Nikon D810 + Opteka 500mm Reflector

Grandma’s Clover Field (2018)

A clover field near my grandparent’s house, in Shandong Province, China. It says something when memories of going home blends in with “Traveling”.

Equipment: Nikon D810 + Nikkor 24-120mm f/4G ED VR

A Busy Universe (2019)

Along a few astronomer friends of mine, I visited the Chile / European Very Large Telescope in the Atacama Desert. In this photo you can see the sodium laser VLT uses for optical adjustments, a passing satellite, and a meteor.

Equipment: Nikon D810 + Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G

Theoretical Physicist Pride / Big Sur Overview (2018)

Many American theoretical physicists meet annually in Big Sur, California. I didn’t qualify as one when I drove there alone and took this photo, but I now understand why this tiny spot of the Pacific Coast is one of their favorite summer retreat spots.

Equipment: Nikon D810 + Nikkor 24-120mm f/4G ED VR

Seoul Impressions (2020)

I was passing by Seoul on a long layover in late January, 2020. COVID was already reported in the city, and people were unaware of how the world would change in the ensuing months.

Equipment: Nikon D810 + Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G

Driving in the Andes (2019)

Our rental car parked on the outskirts of the Chilean capital city, and just in front of the Andes mountains. Jeep never responded to my email sharing this photo with them.

Equipment: Nikon D810 + Nikkor 24-120mm f/4G ED VR

Atacama Impressions (2019)

Atacama desert at sunset, near the famous Mano del Desierto.

Santiago International Airport (2019)

We were about to fly off to Antofagasta on a domestic flight, and I marveled at the international ensemble of planes waiting in front of the Andes.

Equipment: Nikon D810 + Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G

Berkeley Sunset (2017)

I was queuing for dinner when I looked back and saw the Campanile (UC Berkeley’s clock tower) bathed in sunset’s golden light. Lights from the greater San Francisco Bay Area can be seen in the background. Why I went to dinner (immediately after real analysis class) with my camera is still a mystery.

Equipment: Nikon D810 + Nikkor 24-120mm f/4G ED VR

Shanghai Impressions (2019)

Another brief layover city tours. For how many times I used Shanghai to transit to or from Auckland, this is the only time I got out of the airport.

Equipment: Apple iPhone 7 Plus

US Interstate 40 (2017)

Flying away from Las Vegas, Nevada, I saw the famously long and boring US Interstate highway carving its way out of the desert hills.

Equipment: Nikon D810 + Nikkor 24-120mm f/4G ED VR

Bliss (FW Recreation) (2018)

Taken on my last day studying at UC Berkeley, and I had just left behind my secret tokens in the physics building before driving off to Sonoma County. This grapevine-covered hill was captured by another photographer from the same angle some 20 years before me. That photo became the default wallpaper of Windows XP. By the time I’d visited, Microsoft had already stopped supporting that operating system.

July 2019 Total Solar Eclipse

The total solar eclipse over Chile and Argentina in early July 2019. All week’s travel for two minutes of totality, but it still feels like yesterday.

Equipment: Nikon D810 + Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8

Hillside Tunnels (2019)

My hometown Jinan has some of the widest and longest tunnels in the Eurasian continent. The majority of which were dug after I’d moved to NZ.
