From the first days of my doctoral programme I have constructed a system to keep track of my research threads as they come and go (out or in oblivion).
The first digit represents a pre-set division of academia, with 0 being theoretical cosmology, the basis of my current training, complex systems at 4xx and philosophy at 9xx. The next two digits is a sequential counter of how many threads I have pursued. Sub-topics within a thread are distinguished using letters.
Of course, small calculations and early ponderings are not listed here but may explain phantom jumps in the counter.
