Sit Down

This is probably one of the earliest photo collections I ever intended to build—before the camera, before LUX.

Back in late 2015, inspired in part by the strange college essays US future deciders (read: college admissions officers) wanted me to write, I took the baby steps to make a picture album of benches I came across in New Zealand. Some of the photos you will also see here.

Much like why I love wheeled-transport, have I always had a fascination with chairs—especially those found in the open. (Some German sentence order may be slipping in here.) Benches, in particular, invite rest, reflection, and connection. To support someone as they pause is to enable thought and wonder. A bench can create space—for solitude, for conversation with someone familiar, or even a fleeting exchange with a stranger, temporarily intersecting, into different parts unknown.

Of course, benches are also placed in scenic spots. This album celebrates those moments when the bench becomes part of the scenery itself.

Enjoy. Sit down. Sit well—but don’t always remain sitting.
